Amy's water bag broke at about 3:00am on Saturday Sept 21st.  We called the doctor and she told us to go to the hospital so we got everything ready, called someone to take care of Melissa and left for the hospital around 4:00am.  In the car on the way, Amy started having her first contractions and they were immediately 4-5 minutes apart.   By the time we got to the hospital, she was already 3-4 centimeters dilated and they asked if she wanted her epidural or not (like that was a hard question).  Of course, she got it pretty quick.  However, once she got the epidural, her contractions lessened a bit so around 9:00am, they gave her some Pitosen which speeds labor.  I guess that worked because an hour later, Jacob was born.  He cried right away and everything went really well.  Mommy was able to push him out on her own... the doctor didn't do much other than just catch him.  :)

Jacob came into the world at 10:04am on Sept 21st.  He was 8 lbs, 7 ounces and 21.5 inches long.   He's very healthy and doing quite well as is Mommy.  Enjoy the pictures!

Here we are in the hospital on Saturday morning.  The hospital we used was Edward Hospital in Naperville.  They have a beautiful maternity ward with single delivery and recovery rooms so we never had to share a room with another patient.  It's a great hospital with a wonderful staff and they really treated us right.  The second picture is of the machine that monitors the baby's heartrate as well as mommy's contractions.  It's probably the most important machine in the room since it's how you know the baby is doing ok.

Here's Jacob just out of the womb... well, they did wipe him off first.  Babies are awfully messy right out of the womb.  What a cutie.  :)

Here's mommy holding Jacob right after he was initially checked out.  Everything went really well for mommy and she's doing well.

Here's daddy holding Jacob along with some closeups.

By this point, we had finally gone up to the recovery room and Jacob is in the nursery getting ready for his first bath.  He didn't enjoy that much but he's much cleaner now.  :)

Our families came over to visit.  The second picture is Grandpa Mescher holding Jacob.  The hospital was nice enough to let Melissa come up to see us and the last two pictures are Melissa with mommy.  I don't think Melissa quite understood what was going on but she was really good.

Here's Jacob about ready to go home.  Daddy likes trains so he's wearing a cute little train outfit.   Everyone went home around 6:00pm Sunday afternoon.  When we got home, our dog Murray gave Jacob lots of wet sloppy kisses and Jacob didn't even cry.  What a good little boy.  :)  Melissa was a little upset that mommy couldn't pick her up (no heavy lifting after childbirth) but otherwise, she was doing just fine with Jacob.   We'll see how it goes from here, but so far so good.
